Jambo fellow travelers!
Bwana Brucie is back at the rancho at last…
I trust all of you traveled safely and are now sparklingly-clean and well rested. I wasn’t terribly
jet-lagged after the trek back to
Arizona
and am already back in the swing of things.
I shipped the mighty 800mm back to Canon and have begun to edit both
stills and video. I’ll be creating a
video montage that will segue into a tutorial on image finishing and digital
painting. The rough cut begins today and
then it’s into the studio for me. I plan
to document the painting process with two cameras and screen capture software
so it should be a nice finished piece.
I gots me a real bad jones for B&W these days so here's a collection of monochormatic images from this summer's trek to Tanzania. First up is a light painting of the two Boabab trees that framed the entrance to our campsite in Tarangire National Park. One member of my second group was interested in shooting star patterns so I suggested that we add a little foreground interest to the composition. Africa dark is really dark so we had to add some artificial light to the trees to register anything at all. To that end, I set my camera on a beanbag and then ran around with a hand-held speedlite set to Manual Mode. I set the flash's output to 1/2 power and fired it using the "test" button. I ultimately popped each tree three times. ..
Dick is a retired gentleman who loves both photography and the wonders of the natural world. He was carefully strategizing the story, content, and continuity of his digital slideshow from the very first moment I met him. Dick derives great pleasure from sharing his adventures with his local community and his enthusiasm was readily apparent in both his attitude and photographic results.
I know that your project is still ongoing, Dick, but thanks for sharing this preview with us. I think your audience will be very impressed with your results!
After a summer of intense travel it’s really good to be home for a few minutes. I’m still putting out the fires caused by my extended absence but still making time to do a little painting. This image was captured a couple of years ago near Ndutu in Tanzania and I’ve just gotten around to giving it my attention. I really like how it turned out and look forward to printing it on a massive hunk of canvas; I think it’s a perfect candidate for a quick trip through our Canon iPF 9000 sixty-inch wide printer!
As my safari mates may recall, I limited myself to just two lenses during our recent Tanzanian adventures.Canon has recently released two stunning new lenses, the 800mm f5.6 IS
super-telephoto and the 200mm f2 IS – an excellent portrait and low-light sports
lens – and I had early release examples of both.I shot plenty of wildlife with both but found
the 200 to be especially attractive for portraiture. My earlier posting of the Maasai portraits
represents the lens' usefulness as a travel and documentary tool but I also
like it as a fashion optic...
As promised... we finally have EDGE Seminar NOTES for our paid Seminar Attendees!
However, it seems the site was overwhelmed last night! We are arranging another location for the download and will be emailing "Seminar Attendees" with the new access information once things are reorganized.
Our apologies for any inconveniences.
Bruce and I wish to express our thanks to everyone who came to the Seminar!
Great news! I'll be guiding two trips to Tanzania during September of 2009. We'll be hitting many of the same locations featured in this year's safaris but with a stop at Gibbs Farm, the location where I captured all the lovely portraits featured in the pinned blog posting at the top of this page. Either of these classic safaris would be a great introduction to the delights of East Africa and the mighty Serengeti. The first trip runs from September 10th through the 22nd inclusive of travel time. The second trip leaves on September 20th and returns October 2nd. This trip is a great deal and is likely to sell out fairly quickly. Email me for more information...
